years ago. It is an environmental initiative to raise awareness of and
take action against issues affecting our beaches and coastline. When we
adopted Instow Beach, we undertook to become guardians of our beach and
to clean and survey it on a quarterly basis. The findings are reported
to the Marine Conservation Society. Volunteers do the beach cleaning.
Most are from the area, but it is not unusual for those on holiday to
participate.
The Instow & Yelland Woman’s Institute will be providing refreshments in
the Parish Hall.
COMMUNITY ON SHOW TROPHY RACE
NORTH DEVON YACHT CLUB
The Community on Show race will be held at the North Devon Yacht Club.
This will start at approximately 9:30 AM on Saturday, 21st July with the
high tide.
Craft racing to include two-handed catamarans such as Dart 18’s and
Spitfires, the latter to sport multi-coloured sails called gennakers.
The biggest class will be the Sprint 15 cats, aboard which the
single-handed crewman can be seen dangling from a trapeze wire if the
wind is strong enough. More traditionally, the monohulls include the
red-sailed Redwings and the most local of boats, the Wayfarer.
If conditions permit racing, which starts off from the Clubhouse, will
follow a course along Instow sea front to a turning buoy named
Puttermouth in front of the Cricket Club, then head off into the estuary
to buoys further away and return. Usually there are two circuits of the
course. Instow Quay provides a good viewing point.
The race will be run by a Race Officer from the Club and safety cover
provided by fast rigid inflatable boats (RIBS) manned by volunteers
always ready to jump in to the assistance of capsized boats – a fairly
normal occurrence when the wind freshens!
