MINUTES OF THE SEPTEMBER 23rd 1896 MEETING OF INSTOW PARISH COUNCIL


September 23rd 1896

A meeting of the parish Council was held in the vestry room at 7 p.m.
Present. Messrs Lock, Winter, Joslin, Nation Bellew, J Easterbrook, A.
Pidler
W.A. Easterbrook, Anstey and Bellew.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved

The following tenders were then opened viz:-

Tenders for Poor Field Tenders for Drains
J.D. Pidler £2-10-0 C. Molland £1-5-0
E.A. Jones 2-5-0 E. Shackleton 1-10-0
W. Nation 2-2-0 J.D. Pidler 2-0-0
D. Hoyles 2-2-0 R. Parkhouse 2-0-0
J. Shambrook 2-2-0

It was moved by Mr A. Pidler seconded by Mr J Easterbrook that the highest
tender for the field be accepted subject to agreement. Carried

It was moved by Mr W.A. Easterbrook seconded by Mr Joslin that the lowest
tender for the drains be accepted subject to agreement.

The following letter was read from the churchwardens.

"Instow
23 September 1896

Dear Sir
We are handing over to you a box full of documents comprising an old Black
letter Testament, remains of 4 prayer books, out of which one has been made
fairly complete, the remainder comprise old Bastardy proofs & indentures for
Bargaining Apprentices, Lists of seats & a sort of Parson's Commission.

P.S. All is very carefully put together & the Rector commits it to the safe
keeping of the Parish"

It was resolved that the Churchwardens be thanked and the documents be
accepted.

The following letter in reply to the letter sent to the District Council
respecting Marsh Cottages was read also a statement from Messrs Bencraft &
Basson

"Barnstaple
12 September 1896

Dear Sir
Marsh Cottages
Your letter of the 10 inst. came before the Rural District Council at their
meeting held yesterday but pending a report from Mr Thorne as to the
desirability of ventilating the end of the sewer the further consideration
of the same was adjourned to the next meeting.

Ventilating shaft erected against Messrs Ridge and Sanders house

I am directed to forward you for the consideration of your Parish Council
the costs incurred in this matter and shall be glad to receive any
observations your Council may desire to offer thereon.

Mr J.P. England

The following reply was sent to that letter.

"Instow
September 24th 1896

Dear Sir
I have laid your letter of the 12th inst. and Messrs Bencraft & Bosson's
and Messrs Ridge & Sanders' Bills in connection with the ventilating shaft
in the Worlington Road before the Parish Council and am directed to return
the Bills herewith.

The Council desires me to say that they have no opinion to offer in regard
to the bills which they consider should be dealt with by the District
Council and their engineer.

The views of the Parish Council in regard to the Ventilating Shaft are
expressed in a letter addressed to you by the late clerk in January last.

The following bills were presented and ordered to be paid. Cheques were
drawn for the amounts
Mr Vanstone's for building wall in old allotment field £7-17-6
Mr Rendell for cleaning dykes in Recreation Field 10-0
